Almost comparative of an Oscar Bait, which has no critical acclaim.(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)

Disillusion of a show against its first glances. The only great things in this show corresponded to Freddy Mercury's ending song, the Opening Theme animation, and the Art Direction. Trying to enforce consumerism, with real-life references to its snooty script. It conveys itself as a 'Great Pretender' in terms of execution. The anime lives up to its eponymous name. It felt like a show trying to force itself to be amazing. It could've been better with its writing and a more experienced director who has a better idea of the world outside beyond that of anime stereotypes. The show is mostly based outside of Japanese context. Thanks to the average execution of the show. Had great promise with all the visuals at the beginning (OP theme and the unique Art Direction) but came out more of Conceited Storytelling than the wit it was supposed to execute. This show's made to look smart, but it's not up to the mark over its execution. Honestly this show is unique and interesting enough that I think everyone should give it a try, and I think you will be glad you did whether or not you love it or not. That being said, the ending wasn't bad enough to ruin my perception of the entire show, so I'm still giving it an 8.

I'm not going to spoil anything, but it just kind of felt like they had stuff happens just because, and it threw the entire series continuity out the window. Honestly the show was inching toward getting a 9 until the last few episodes. In my opinion, case 1 is an 8, case 2 is a 7, case 3 is a 10, and case 4 is a 7. The different cases are definitely different and interesting too. The art is extremely unique and is done phenomenally well (like I'm talking best animation of the year levels), the music is unique and really cool, (Jazz!) the heists and cons are planned out and executed well for the most part, the characters are unique and have depth, and overall it's pretty fun.

Great pretender does a phenomenal job in a lot of compartments. It's somewhere in between and in this case as I actually really wanted to see how it ended I gave it an 8 - but it was a close call. In terms of the rating I really struggled on whether to give it a 7 or an 8 out of 10. Especially the last arc (shown as "season 2" on Netflix) has a pretty weird resolution. So at times the story flow doesn't feel natural. It is written in a way to just make it work. The outcome of the story arcs in the later episodes feels forced. The main character has some development though throughout the various arcs though and it is pretty interesting to watch him cope with the various con jobs he's being dragged into. The characters overall are pretty diverse in what they are even though most of them don't really have any character development meaning at the end they are basically the same as they are at the beginning. The soundtrack throughout the show is solid but not memorable except for the ending song which is performed by Freddy Mercury. But i can see how some might interpret that the opposite way. It feels like its taken its influences from some of the best anime ever made like Bebop, baccano and GTO and made something of its own. Which very hard to do i imagine when also writing it as a comedy that also isnt your typical 'black comedy' either. But often the outcome isnt edgy or depressing. Yet this is not close to as silly as OPM, dealing with some pretty heavy topics. The first comedy adult anime I've enjoyed since the first season of OPM. Its a solid 8.5 series, but i voted a bit higher to off set some silly reviews. The animation is some of the best since the hand drawn days. I think that's all it needs.īoth the dub and sub are great. Now that netflix has picked it up it has a much better chance at getting one more hopefully.
